The young players not to watch in 2013

This year has seen some eye-catching debuts for several of the Test nations. Here's a rundown of the players who might be bursting onto the scene in the next

Bradley Mitchell (Australia)
Exciting but raw young quick who has played just four first-class games. Swings it both ways but has been troubled by injuries.

Mitchell Bradley (Australia)
Exciting but raw young quick who has never actually played a cricket match. Swings it both ways but has been troubled by being in full body plaster cast for 18 months.

Madley Britchell (Australia)
Exciting but raw young foetus who has yet to be born. Potential to swing it both ways but has been troubled by being incredibly fragile and the size of a pea.

Madge Bishop (Australia)
Exciting but raw soap opera character. Has been troubled by being dead since 2001, but still regarded as most physically durable pace bowling option open to Australia.

Ted Cowdrey-May (England)
English batsman with impeccable pedigree, having been grown in a genetics laboratory from the DNA of 1950s legends. Widely tipped to pass 1000 questions about his famous relatives by the end of May.

Arkwright Grimthorpe (England)
Nuggety Yorkshire opening batsman hand-reared by Sir Geoffrey Boycott. Enjoys occupying the crease, oiling his thigh pad, leaving the ball. On course to pass 1000 minutes at the crease before scoring first run.

Jewel Van Der Botha (England)
Exciting Krugersdorp-born quick who makes up for girl's name with reverse-swinging yorkers, tattoos. Recently introduced to Andy Flower in the duty-free at Heathrow airport. Expected to pass 1000 questions on UK Citizenship Test by end of May.

Ross Vincent (New Zealand)
Regarded as safe pair of hands to sort out crisis in New Zealand cricket, Vincent is a safe pair of hands in a tight spot and has a safe pair of hands in the slips. He enjoys long walks, spending time with friends and family, and a really funny thing once happened to him when he was batting and he nearly forgot to put his gloves on before he walked out, although he remembered just in time. Regarded as the most exciting thing to happen to New Zealand cricket since the discovery of wood, he is a safe pair of hands to put bums on seats and get the turnstiles clicking again for Kiwi cricket.

Kumar Dev (India)
Exciting batting talent who hits a long ball in the IPL and, although yet to play a Test, is already worth $10 million as face of Pepsi India. Has a weakness against the short ball, tending to turn his back on it too quickly.

Dev Kumar (India)
Exciting batting talent who hits a long ball in the IPL and, although not too sure what a Test match might actually be, is already worth $47 million as face (and overweight body) of McDonalds India. Has a weakness against the short ball, tending to turn his back on it and run away screaming to the pavilion.

Sunil Gavaskar (India)
Exciting batting talent now regarded as best possible hope for future of Indian Test top six.

Sri Lanka flee from credibility

If there is a moment that captures Sri Lanka's first Boxing Day Test in 17 years, it is Dhammika Prasad fleeing from the ball as it approached him at fine leg on day two.

Michael Hussey had hooked a Shaminda Eranga bouncer and, having failed to pick up the ball, Prasad picked a direction to sprint in and chose poorly. That is perhaps unfair to Prasad, whose drive and desperation did him credit on day two, but Sri Lanka have done the opposite of what would have constituted a healthy showing at the MCG, and in doing so, they have hurtled beyond the merely disappointing and run aground on the farcical.

The sense of humour that Sri Lanka's fans have developed over the last two years of Test cricket may be the only quality that will see the team retain their support for the third Test.

Sri Lanka's experienced batsmen were called on by their captain to go big in Melbourne and the game plan on a good pitch was to bat first and spend enough time at the crease to bring Rangana Herath into the game on a wearing pitch. Instead, the batting in both innings bore all the stability of a slowly collapsing circus tent.

At the end of the first day's play, coach Graham Ford suggested the excitement of a Boxing Day Test and Sri Lanka's desperation to do well may have drawn the batting errors that comprised their capitulation. If that is the case, Sri Lanka's top order, who have close to 400 Tests between them, were not far different from an excited child who springs from bed on his Christmas morning, runs straight into a wall and spends the day in a coma. It is not an image a team perpetually struggling to achieve global recognition needs to portray in one of the most widely followed cricket matches of the year.

That a man of Kumar Sangakkara's quality had never played a Test in one of cricket's most iconic venues until he was 35 was considered a minor travesty by some, but after this loss - the third heaviest in the team's history - Sri Lanka's next generation will be fortunate to play a Boxing Day Test at all.

Day three's collapse was even more risible than the first innings effort. Inside two overs, Sri Lanka were 3 for 3 needing to bat for nearly three days to save the Test. They might have had little to gain at that stage but there was not even a hint of courage in their demise and at times batsmen seemed to be looking for the ball to which they could succumb. Sri Lanka's cricketers can be glad that even their most impassioned followers do not descend to the ugliness that sportsmen sometimes have to contend with elsewhere in the subcontinent.

On a pitch Mitchell Johnson made appear a road as he beat out an unruffled 92 not out, he then made appear a lake of fire, as he took 2 for 16 and ended the tour of Sri Lanka's best batsman, Sangakkara - whose innings was the only whimper of protest - striking Prasad painfully in the hand as well.

"We can't be happy at all with the way that we played today," Mahela Jayawardene said after the match. "We haven't played well from day one and we need to all take responsibility for that. Despite having talked about what needed to happen, we haven't put those things into action. Especially the batsmen need to take a lot of responsibility. We needed to fight and we didn't do that. Only Sanga was playing well and even he has now been injured."

The bumbling in the field may have been outshone by Sri Lanka's blinding ineptitude with the bat but an attack whose lack of penetration even Sri Lanka are aware of can hardly be blamed if the chances they do produce are fluffed. Herath created no less than four chances in 39 overs that went at 2.43, three of them clear-cut. Chanaka Welegedara had Shane Watson dropped off his bowling as well, and Watson and Michael Clarke shared four reprieves between them during their 194-run stand - five if you include a shy at the stumps that might have caught Watson short if it had been a direct hit.

Sri Lanka now face the task of mounting a face-saving performance in Sydney, with their morale devastated and their dressing room decimated by injury. They have fled from tenacity, resolve and credibility at the MCG. They cannot afford to flee from the hard truths that are their only avenue to a competitive final Test. A maiden win in Australia seems distant indeed.

Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik included in ODI squad against India

Pakistan Cricket Board’s selection committee has included veteran all-rounders Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik within the One Day International squad touring India.

The decision came forward on Friday as it was learned that the selection committee has requested a clearance from PCB’s Chairman Zaka Ashraf over the inclusion of the two all-rounders.

According to PCB officials, the selection committee had requested for an approval from PCB’c chairman to include two experienced players within the squad stating it as the need of the hour.

The request was accepted by PCB’s chairman and both Afridi and Malik were included in the ODI squad touring India. Both the players who were scheduled to return back to Pakistan on 29th December but since now they have been included in the ODI squad, both of them would stay back and continue playing with the remaining squad.

It has also been learned that ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq played a pivotal role towards the inclusion of the the two veterans. Misbah had earlier shown a positive intent towards the inclusion of both the players and had earlier stated that he himself would request for their inclusion if any improvement in the performance of the players would be witnessed.

Both Malik and Afridi had to face the axe from the selection committee earlier because of their slump form and they were only made a part of the T20 squad.

Afridi’s current performance in the last two domestic matches along with his bowling in the first T20 and Malik’s match winning knock played an instrumental part towards their inclusion within the ODI squad.

Rehman banned for 12 weeks for cannabis use

Abdur Rehman, the Pakistan left-arm spinner, has been banned for 12 weeks by the ECB under its anti-doping rules after testing positive for the recreational drug cannabis during his stint with Somerset in the English domestic season. The penalty is binding on all countries signed up to the World Anti-Doping Code.

Rehman will be suspended until midnight of December 21. He has already been withdrawn from the Sialkot Stallions squad for the Champions League T20, which begins on October 9 in South Africa.

The sample that tested positive for cannabis was provided by Rehman on August 8, during the County Championship match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire. "I apologise to my family, the PCB, the ECB, Somerset County Cricket Club, my team-mates and my fans," Rehman said. "It was an error of judgement on my part that will cost me dearly and I would like it to be a lesson to all others in sports elsewhere.

"I will do my best to stay fit and focussed during my suspension, and, god-willing, will be available for selection for the India series should the PCB see it fit."

Somerset chief executive Guy Lavender said the club supported the ECB's decision. "The club does not condone the use of illegal drugs in any circumstances and all Somerset players are made fully aware of this policy on a regular basis."

Rehman played four Championship matches for Somerset and took 27 wickets, which included 9 for 65 against Worcestershire. He had established himself as a key player for Pakistan over the past year and caused England plenty of problems during the Test series in UAE, where he claimed 19 wickets in three matches. Overall he has 81 wickets in 17 Tests at 28.40 apiece.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan in familiar territory

Pakistan didn't know until late on Tuesday night whether they'd have to keep their hotel reservations in Colombo for a few more days. But when South Africa's Robin Peterson gloved a ball for a single to take the score to 122 against India, a roar went around the Premadasa. It sounded as though Sri Lanka were playing, but the noise was from a legion of Pakistan fans who were celebrating their team's progress to the semi-finals on net run rate, at India's expense. There wasn't much separating the two sides, but Pakistan were better placed because they got their tactics right and won big against Australia earlier in the evening.

Spin has been Pakistan's strength in this tournament and their captain Mohammad Hafeez used his resources astutely. If that meant giving a rookie spinner the new ball and making the most experienced fast bowler wait till the 18th over, then so be it. The plan was to suffocate the Australians with turn on a sluggish pitch and it worked to such an extent that even Shane Watson had a rare, bad outing. The fielders made Australia's qualifying target of 112 seem distant. As a result, Pakistan play their fourth World Twenty20 semi-final tomorrow, but unlike on Tuesday, they will not have the lion's share of the support.

Sri Lanka are familiar opponents for Pakistan. The hosts were the more dominant side when Pakistan visited in June-July. Sri Lanka looked a more settled side in the Super Eights, making heavy weather of the chase against New Zealand (which culminated in a Super Over victory) and trouncing West Indies and England. The return of Ajantha Mendis has given their spin attack more bite and the seamers, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara don't offer respite.

It's ironic though that the semi-final is Sri Lanka's first game in Colombo during this World Twenty20. They love playing at the Premadasa and the pitch - not as quick as the ones Pakistan played on in June - should suit their spinners. Sri Lanka haven't had a world title since 1996. They are two games away from breaking the drought, at home.

Watch out for

Spin v spin: Opening with spin has become the norm for Pakistan. Will Hafeez adopt the same tactic against Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene, who are fluent players of slow bowling? Hafeez, Hasan and Saeed Ajmal conceded only 53 in 12 overs and took all seven wickets that fell against Australia. The two Mendises - Ajantha and Jeevan - have played vital roles for Sri Lanka as well, and they also possess a largely unknown quantity in Akila Dananjaya.

Something's got to give for Shahid Afridi. He has looked a shadow of his old self with the ball, while as a batsman he remains unreliable. His three wickets in the tournament are at odds with his reputation for running through line-ups. Afridi still gets the odd delivery to grip and beat the bat, but Pakistan need more from him. His star value may not have diminished, but his wicket-taking and match-winning ability has.

Team news

Mohammad Hafeez didn't drop any hints of team changes. Pakistan wouldn't want to disturb their winning combination.

Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Raza Hasan.

Mahela Jayawardene stopped short of saying he would captain again after Sri Lanka's smart play-safe approach against England. He didn't hint at team changes either.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Jeevan Mendis, 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Akila Dananjaya, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Stats and trivia

Sri Lanka have lost all four Twenty20 matches they've played at the Premadasa.

Of the 11 matches at the Premadasa in this tournament, only one has been won by the team winning the toss - by Australia against South Africa.

Quotes

"We may not have won too many finals but getting there itself shows that we have played consistent cricket."
Mahela Jayawardene

"T20 is all about giving surprises every time you play. We are trying to do that, and most of the time, we are getting some success in that. I have no idea what it will be [tomorrow], but you never know."
Mohammad Hafeez.

ICC T20 World Cup 2012: Determined India face stern South Africa test

Their campaign is back on track after the morale-boosting win over Pakistan but India can hardly afford to relax as they take on an erratic but still quite intimidating South Africa in their final Super Eight match for a place in the semifinals of the ICC World Twenty20 here at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday.

The fight for the second semi-final slot from group-2 is indeed intriguingly poised as both India and Pakistan have a fair chance of making the cut although Australia seems favourite at the moment.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted that devising a strategy without knowing the result of the Australia versus Pakistan game will be foolhardy as that will help them chart their course of action.

In case Pakistan (-0.426), who are a shade better than India (-0.452) in terms of net run-rate happen to win against Australia, Dhoni and his men will then have to win comprehensively against the South Africans in order to make it to the last four.

If Australia maintain a clean slate in the 'Super Eight' by beating Pakistan, the equation will be a lot easier for India as a win will be good enough. Even in case of a defeat against South Africa, India should ensure that they don't lose by a big margin as the net run rate will come into play with three teams tied with one win each.

South Africa have lost both their matches in contrasting manners -- a close defeat against Pakistan and a comprehensive one against Australia.

AB de Villiers and Co. will now want to end the tournament on a respectable note and think of an outside chance of qualifying although their net run-rate might prove to be a deterrent.

On Tuesday, the Indian team will not only have to deal with a South African team that is keen to maintain its reputation as a world class outfit but also have to counter the threat of a man who knows about them like the back of his hand.

Gary Kirsten, inarguably India's most successful cricket coach, is now in the opposition ranks and will play a key role in trying to plot the downfall of the 'Men in Blue'.

Spin will again play a key role in the match and it will be interesting to see whether Dhoni would go for a second spinner in Harbhajan Singh by dropping senior pro Zaheer Khan.

With the seven-batsman policy paying results and a theory that Dhoni believes in, it remains to be seen whether he would rejig his bowling resources or stick to the winning formula.

The South African batsmen looked distinctly uncomfortable against the off-spin of Mohammed Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal in the match against Pakistan.

Even left-arm slow orthodox bowler Xavier Doherty troubled the Proteas in the last match which will certainly encourage Yuvraj Singh, who has turned into a utility 'bowling all-rounder' in this edition of the World T20.

The big question will be whether the Indian skipper will bring in Harbhajan who can be effective considering the South African line-up features two left-handers in Jean-Paul Duminy and Robin Peterson.

The opening woes, however, is a cause of concern for Dhoni as both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have been scratchy in the tournament.

Sehwag, who was brought back for the Pakistan match, showed his intent to stay at the wicket and should be praised for playing an ideal second fiddle to Virat Kohli during the defining 74-run second wicket partnership.

But at the same time, the senior opener frittered away a good start to get out at a time when he looked good for his first half century of the tournament.

Gambhir made a useful contribution in India's victory against England but otherwise has had a very quiet tournament.

It will again boil down to the performance of Kohli, who has been the most consistent among the Indian top-order batsmen. The team management also requires Yuvraj Singh to make a significant contribution with the bat as he has been consuming way too many deliveries.

An interesting battle will would be on display when the Indians tackle the fiery pace of Dale Steyn and the disconcerting bounce that Morne Morkel will generate.

In all a mouth-watering clash is on the cards on the final day of the Super Eights.

Jhulan Goswami's all-round effort went in vain, with Nida Rashid's triple-strike giving Pakistan a thrilling win

01 October 2012 - 01:16pm IST by Shashank Kishore in Galle
It wasn't a contest billed as the mother of all battles, nor was it one with too much fanfare and build-up. But despite all that, it was still an India-Pakistan clash, and reason enough for both sides to try their best. At the end of it all, Pakistan’s women did what the men could not, beating India by a run in Galle on Monday (October 1).

Chasing 99, India ended on 97 for 8 from its 20 overs. It was its third loss in as many matches in the tournament. Pakistan was on the receiving end till about five overs into India's chase, but the turnaround was scripted by Nida Rashid, the off-spinner, whose triple strike saw off India's middle order and induced panic in the ranks.

India, which was cruising along at 44 for one in the tenth over, suddenly lost three wickets in two overs, with both Mithali Raj (16) and Harmanpreet Kaur (5) back in the pavilion. Reema Malhotra tried to hit her way out of trouble and was bowled by Sana Mir, Pakistan’s captain, for just 7.

Jhulan Goswami was the only batter who seemed capable of striking the big blows needed towards the end. But, Bisma Maroof dismissed Goswami (21) and Amita Sharma (7) in the same over to leave India with 14 to get off the final one. But Mir held her nerve and India managed only 12 as Pakistan squeezed home by the narrowest of margins.

Rashid was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with figures of 3 for 12 in four overs. She exhibited tremendous control and wasn't afraid to flight the ball even to the experienced Indian batters.

Earlier, India looked sharp and disciplined as it restricted Pakistan to 98 for 9. Mir, who opened the batting, top-scored with 26. Although cautious initially, she was in fine nick and looked for a big score before she was sent back by Rasanara Parwin, the debutant, in the tenth over.

A lot was expected from Nain Abidi, Pakistan's most prolific run-scorer on the recent tour of Ireland. While she appeared well set, the Indian spinners did well to build pressure from the other end. With the run-rate languishing around four, Abidi had to go after the bowling and she was eventually out to Goswami for 25. Goswami was India's best bowler, with figures of two for 16 from four overs.

Maroof and Javeria Khan failed and the lower middle order was exposed to the Indian spinners – Anuja Patil and Parwin – who had combined figures of four for 31 from six overs.

Pakistan started the tournament ranked below India, but after a determined defence of a small target, it was they that walked away from the competition with heads high. For India, semi-finalists in 2009 and 2010, there was no consolation.

Bangladesh faces must-win against settled Pakistan

Bangladesh faces must-win against settled Pakistan
Bangladesh must not only win, but win by enough to qualify on Net Run-Rates - not an easy task against a well-oiled Pakistan team

24 September 2012 - 03:57pm IST by Anand Vasu in Pallekele
It was Pakistan’s legendary all-rounder and captain, Imran Khan, who was credited with delivering a supposedly inspiring speech, urging his players to “fight like cornered tigers” at the ICC World Cup 1992. Ahead of a must-win match against Australia, Imran is believed to have told his players, “You've got nowhere to go, go out and fight.” In the ICC World Twenty20 2012, Pakistan finds that the boot in on the other foot ahead of the last match of the league phase.

Mushfiqur Rahim might well tell his team that there’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, but it’s not clear if Bangladesh’s captain is the kind of person who likes to deliver motivational speeches. And, given the kind of strokes some of Bangladesh’s top order play, despite repeated entreaties to start slowly and build big, it doesn’t seem like many of them listen to speeches.

The equation for Bangladesh is clear, or at least one half of it is. If Bangladesh bats first, it needs to win by 36 runs or more to narrow the gap in the Net Run Rate and knock Pakistan out of the ICC World Twenty20 2012. If Pakistan bats first, then Bangladesh will have to reach the target in something under 20 overs – to be determined by what total Pakistan manages.

This situation has arisen, of course, because New Zealand beat Bangladesh by the healthy margin of 59 runs, while it managed to keep the margin of defeat against Pakistan down to 13 runs.

For Bangladesh, the challenge in the match against New Zealand was pacing itself. Batsmen repeatedly took the aerial route early on and perished, after Brendon McCullum had bludgeoned 123 to take New Zealand to 191. Tamim Iqbal found the cover fielder, Shakib-al-Hasan chipped to cover-point, Mushfiqur Rahim holed out to deep mid-wicket, Mahmadullah found long-on … the list is long. Bangladesh managed just 132.

Mushfiqur admitted that his batsmen had attacked a bit recklessly, but justified this, saying this was what the format demanded. “When it comes off, it looks very spectacular and you feel that they did the right thing,” said Mushfiqur. “On days when it does not come off, of course, you look back and wonder if things could have been done differently.”

If Bangladesh’s batsmen were contemplating curbing their natural instincts, they might actually be given the license to do the opposite, in case Pakistan bats first and puts a decent score on the board. The team, which calls itself the Bangla Tigers, something that is reflected in the logo of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, would do well to recall Imran’s call to arms.

Bangladesh was set to make at least one change to the team that played the first match. With that being a 3.30pm start, Mushfiqur expected a bit more assistance for the slower bowlers, and played three left-arm spinners. “We probably made a mistake in reading the conditions,” he said of the decision to include Abdur Razzaq, Shakib-Al-Hasan and Elias Sunny. “We thought there would be a lot more turn. We have enough options in the squad, with seam bowling all-rounders and fast-medium bowlers on the bench. Given that this game is under lights, and that we know the pitch a bit better, we will look at bringing in an extra fast-medium option.”

Pakistan, for its part, will not worry unduly about the permutations and combinations that Mushfiqur is pondering. A simple win will do the trick for Mohammad Hafeez, and often, when the game is approached that way, it yields the best results.

ICC World T20 2012: 20 players to watch out for (Part I)

Starting today, we will run at four-part series that will focus on 20 players we believe you should watch out for during the World T20 event, which kicks off in Sri Lanka from September 18. Presenting Part I:

Virat Kohli (India)

Irrespective of the format, if it is about India, it’s got to be Kohli. The India number three has been in unstoppable form over the last year. Even in India’s last T20 encounter prior to the World T20, Kohli smashed a whirlwind 70. It was a pity India couldn’t win in spite of his heroics, but the team would be pleased that Kohli’s good run just doesn’t seem to end. The Indians would only be hoping that he continues with the same rich run of scores.

David Warner (Australia)

The left-hander opener may have had a mixed run in international cricket lately, but the Aussies would be hoping for the explosive opener to fire, as it will increase their chances of doing well significantly. If he delivers to potential, Warner can destroy the best attacks in the world. He has the experience of playing international cricket for a few seasons now, and hence will be expected to deliver on the big stage. Warner’s experience in the IPL, where he has been a success, should also work in his favour. In 36 T20s till date, Warner has scored at a highly impressive strike rate of 140. If he gets going, opponents would be in for a leather hunt.

Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh)

It goes without saying that Bangladesh’s fortunes in the World T20 will depend to a large extent on how Shakib performs, with both bat and ball. One of modern cricket’s best all-rounders, Shakib has proven his ability against the best in all formats. As such, Bangladesh would be looking forward to their ex-captain to play the lead role even though he is not the skipper. As a middle-order bat, Shakib can rotate the strike as well as clear the field. And, as a left-arm spinner, he is accurately, and at the same time, a wicket-taking bowler. In fact, he has got a magnificent T20 record, with 27 wickets at a strike rate of 18.

Alex Hales (England)

Hales’s performance would be significant for one prime reason – he is Kevin Pietersen’s replacement as opener in the side. It is near impossible to substitute an impact player like KP, the man of the tournament during England’s victorious 2010 World T20 campaign. Having said that, Hales has been chosen to do the job, which means the English management has faith in him. He hasn’t done a lot wrong for the team so far, with two fifties, including a 99 in seven games. The World T20 will be a sterner test nonetheless.

Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan)

Not many would have heard a lot about him, but Nabi is a highly rated cricketer in Afghanistan. An all-rounder, he has played first-class cricket for the MCC, and has been a key figure in Afghanistan’s rising stakes in recent times. He has to his credit a half-century on one-day international debut. Also, in his first ever first-class fixture in Afghanistan colours, a match against Zimbabwe XI, he registered a century. Such performances have made him a reputed batsman in the side. As an off-spinner as well, Nabi has made his mark. He scalped 13 wickets for Afghanistan in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers that were held in 2010 at an unbelievable average of just over 10.

Ireland upset Zimbabwe in Warm Ups

Ireland upset Zimbabwe in Warm Ups
Ireland defeated Zimbabwe by a comprehensive margin of 54 runs in the Warm Up match of the ICC World T20 2012 at Moors Sports Club Ground in Colombo.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Ireland piled up an impressive 181 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs. Wicket Keeper batsman Niall O’Brien top scored with 62 from 49 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. His brother Kevin O’Brien came up with an unbeaten cameo of 30 from 14 balls 2 fours and 2 sixes. For the Zimbabweans, medium pacer Chris Mpofu took 3 for 39 in 4 overs.

Zimbabwe in the run chase were going along nicely at 74 for 2 in the 9th over before a middle order collapse wrecked them apart. The Zims were reduced out of nowhere to 83 for 8 by the 14th over. In the end, they finished at 127 for 8 to come as a distant second. Opener Hamilton Masakadza was the top scorer with 44 from 27 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

Left-arm spinner George Dockrell and medium pacer Alex Cusack took three wickets each. Fast bowler Boyd Rankin came up with a tidy spell of 4-1-16-1.

Sri Lanka cruise to nine-wicket win

Sri Lanka v West Indies, World Twenty20 warm-up, Colombo
Sri Lanka cruise to nine-wicket win
A collective bowling performance from Sri Lanka and half-centuries by Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene made short work of West Indies on the first day of warm-up matches for the World Twenty20. Nuwan Kulasekara struck the early blows and West Indies could manage only 132, a target Sri Lanka achieved with 4.2 overs to spare.

The West Indies batsmen attacked in spurts, but could not maintain their assaults as Sri Lanka prised regular wickets through disciplined bowling. The low NCC wicket did not help timing, nor did it allow the West Indies' hitters to achieve the elevation they might have preferred. With Chris Gayle being rested, no sixes were hit during their innings. Even Kieron Pollard, who was at the crease for almost ten overs, could only manage two boundaries, digging out yorkers and patting away the spinners into the outfield.

Johnson Charles' 30 from 26 stabilised West Indies after Kulasekara had removed both openers. Charles scored most of his runs square of the wicket, rising tall on the back foot to punch crisply through the offside for two of his three boundaries, before Sri Lanka placed a sweeper for the shot and adjusted their lengths. Darren Bravo barely played a fluent stroke throughout his stay, his 29 - the second highest score for the West Indies - came off 31 balls.

Akila Dananjaya could not take a wicket from three overs on a pitch that appeared to have little in it for spinners, but both he and the Sri Lanka management will find an economy rate of less than six heartening. Lasith Malinga's yorkers were humming nicely toward the end of the innings, and the lack of bounce meant that he was difficult to punish even if the ball pitched slightly short. Kulasekara and Thisara Perera, who are both returning from injury, were the most expensive bowlers for Sri Lanka.

Dilshan Munaweera's baptism against top level opposition threatened to be a swift one when Fidel Edwards rapped him on the shoe first ball, but having survived the raucous appeal and despite initially struggling to handle Edwards' pace, Munaweera quickly began to find the square boundary off the other bowlers. He was dismissed attempting to pull Ravi Rampaul from outside off, when perhaps a cut or a dab to third man would have been more appropriate.

Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan progressed smoothly thereafter, punishing only the poor deliveries to begin with, before introducing scoops, reverse sweeps, and in Jayawardene's case, a reverse pull, into their innings. Sunil Narine was dealt with minimum fuss, while Edwards also lost his sting as the ball grew softer. The West Indies fast men showed hints of rust, with too many deliveries being picked off the pads, and several more being pitched short and wide.

Dilshan and Jayawardene both accelerated to their half-centuries and completed the chase in the 16th over.
